Cut-price fertiliser sale begins

Diammonium phosphate (DAP) fertiliser will be sold both to the farmers and dealers at reduced price from today (Monday).

The government on December 04 reduced the price of DAP fertiliser by Tk 9.0 per kg from Tk 25 to Tk 16 for the farmers.

For the dealers, the price was re-fixed at Tk 14 from Tk 23 a kg.

Agriculture minister Dr Mohammad Abdur Razzaque said DAP at reduced price is a Victory Day gift for the farmers from the government, said a press release issued by the ministry.

"A farmer can now save a significant amount of money by using DAP."

Apart from having phosphorus, Dr Razzaque said, DAP fertiliser contains 18 per cent of nitrogen.

Application of DAP could also help reduce the use of urea fertiliser, he added.

The government's decision to revise the fertiliser price could help maintain sustainable and eco-friendly food security including reduction of food production cost and motivation of farmers to use balanced fertilisers.

"Further subsidy will cost the government additional Tk 8.0 billion for DAP fertiliser," the minister was quoted as saying.

The demand for DAP fertiliser is now 0.5 million tonnes in Bangladesh, according to the agriculture ministry.
