A man was killed and five others injured in a clash between two groups centring the selection of sloughing place at Ratanpur village in Barishal’s Mehendiganj upazila on Wednesday morning.

The victim was identified as Alil Gharami, 40, son of Mozid Gharami of the village.

The victim's family had a long-standing dispute with their cousin Shah Alam Gharami over ownership of a piece of land beside a canal, said the deceased's brother Ripon Gharami.

On the morning of Eid-ul-Azha, Shah Alam Gharami was taking preparation to slaughter his sacrificial animal on the disputed land.

When Alil opposed this, Shah Alam along with some of his companions attacked the victim with locally made sharp weapons and hacked him indiscriminately around 8:30 am, Ripon said.

The attackers also hit Humayun Kabir, Kamal Hossain, Md Masud, Shahid Hossain and Alamgir Hossain when they tried to save Alil, UNB reported.

Later, all of the injured were rushed to Shevachim Hospital where the duty doctor declared Alil dead, he added.

Being informed, police rushed in and brought the situation under control and arrested two suspects from the spot, said Md Harun-or-Rashid of Kazihaat Police Station.
