Global Covid-19 reaches 99m

Confirmed Covid-19 infections around the world approached 99 million on early Sunday.

And the death toll from Covid-19 continued its relentless march upwards, with more than 2.1 million people known to have died worldwide.

The worldwide number of Covid-19 cases reached 98,747,150 and fatalities rose to 2,120,840, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The US – the world’s worst-hit country – reported 24,994,465 cases and 417,439 deaths.

Meanwhile, India confirmed 10,654,533 cases and 153,339 deaths until early Sunday. And Brazil’s case tally reached 8,816,254 and fatalities stood at 216,445.

Covid-19 in Bangladesh

Covid-19 fatalities in Bangladesh soared to 8,003 after the health authorities confirmed 22 more deaths in 24 hours until Saturday morning.

The caseload now stands at 531,326 with 436 new cases reported during the period, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to launch coronavirus vaccination drive at Kurmitola General Hospital in the capital on January 27.

Two million doses of Covid-19 vaccine “gifted” by India reached Dhaka on Thursday.

Besides, thirty million doses of the vaccine are scheduled to arrive between January and June (five million a month) as per the agreement the government signed with Serum Institute of India, reports UNB.
