The government has chalked out an ambitious plan to roll out a test-run of fifth generation wireless systems, abbreviated as 5G network services, in the country.

As per the plan, the 5G trial-run will be held in the second week of next month (ensuing July).

Minister for Post, Telecommunication and ICT Mustafa Jabbar has disclosed the information to the FE.

"The 5G test-run will be conducted within a month with technological support from China-based tech giant Huawei," he informed.

Industry insiders say Huawei is among the world's leading technology companies that have finished the second phase of 5G research and development (R&D) tests in China.

Bangladesh is yet to come under full 3G coverage while 4G has been introduced only in February this year and it will take some more time for full deployment of 4G network across the country. Against this backdrop, the government has taken the lofty 5G initiative.

Sources in the government, however, said Bangladesh lagged behind other neighbouring countries in introducing 4G services, now the country wants to avoid repeating the same in case of introducing the 5G service.

As for argument, they said planning, procurement and setting strategy on part of the government usually takes a lot of time.

Hence the incumbent government wants to step forward now rather than later as part of its preparation to introduce 5G services in the country by December 16, 2021.

5G network will vastly improve data speeds on mobile devices and will help free up much-needed bandwidth as it is the next generation of mobile internet connectivity, offering more reliable connections on smartphones and other devices than ever before.
