The government has taken a move to construct barbed-wire fence along bordering areas to secure Border Outposts (BoPs) and frontiers with neighbouring India and Myanmar.

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the boarder fencing project at a meeting, presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday in Dhaka, along with 14 other schemes at a cost of Tk 179.87 billion.

The Boarder Guard of Bangladesh (BGB) will construct nearly 249,071 running metres of fences in parts of border with the two nations.

The BGB has selected 587 Boarder Outpost (BoP) areas in the frontiers with Myanmar and India to build the fences, officials said.

It said the fence will check illegal entrance of people, drugs and products along with ensuring higher security at the BGB BoPs.

Emerging from the ECNEC meeting, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal told the journalists that a total of 15 projects were approved on the day involving Tk 179.87 billion as costs.

Of the total project costs, Tk 119.40 billion will come from the government’s own exchequer, Tk 5.23 billion from the implementing agencies’ own fund while the remaining Tk 55.23 billion from the donors as project assistance, he said.

Of the approved projects, 13 are new while two others are revised projects.
