The 4th international conference on Bangladesh’s environment (ICBEN-4) has begun with the motto to strengthen the environment movement to ensure a liveable earth.

Over 40 renowned environmental and social activists from some 11 countries across the globe, including local and foreign experts, scientists, researchers and professionals will attend the event.

Bangladesh Environment Movement (BAPA) and Bangladesh Environment Network (BEN) have jointly organised the three-day virtual conference.

Speaking as the chief guest, Prof. Rehman Sobhan said, “We have to use our skills to accelerate the environmental movement and create mass awareness”

“The environmental movement has had a profound effect on the authorities concerned which take the government to imitate operations to rescue rivers of the country including Buriganga from grabbers,” he added.

Youth should be involved in the movement to protect the environment, he emphasised.

President of BAPA Sultana Kamal presided over the event and said “the environmental movement is not just a movement to protect the environment but also a movement for the development of human life and livelihood.”

Saber Hossain Chowdhury, President, Standing Committee on the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change addressed as the chief guest of the 'First Joint General Session' of the international event.

He said that the parliamentary committee does not support any activities that go against a sound environment, claiming that the country’s environment is much better now than earlier.

He said BAPA should create mass awareness and make the youth of the country aware before going for any movement.

The keynote address of the session was jointly presented by Ben's founder and BAPA vice-president Dr. Nazrul Islam.
