Awami League (AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Sunday said there is no alternative to the Sheikh Hasina government to protect Bangladesh and its democracy and development.

“If we want to protect Bangladesh, the Awami League must be protected. To save the freedom fighters of Bangladesh, the AL must be saved. To save the democracy, development and achievements of Bangladesh, there is no alternative to Sheikh Hasina on the stage of power,” he said.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, was addressing a rally, jointly organised by Chattogram city and Chattogram north and south district units of the AL, at Polo Ground in Chattogram, reports BSS.

In the last 47 years, he said, the name of the most popular leader, skilled administrator and successful diplomat was Sheikh Hasina.

AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina spoke at the rally as the chief guest with Chattogram City AL acting president Mahtab Uddin in the chair.

Noting that plots are still being hatched to kill Sheikh Hasina, the AL general secretary said: “We know that conspiracies are going on to kill Sheikh Hasina as we know the history.

Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Hasina along with most of his family members were killed as it was impossible to defeat him (Bangabandhu) in elections, he said.

The two daughters of Bangabandhu – Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana – were abroad at that time, otherwise they were not supposed to remain alive, he added.

Responding to the statements of BNP leaders, Quader urged BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and its leaders Amir Khashru Chowdhury, Abdullah Al Noman and Mir Nasir to see the mammoth gathering of AL men at today’s Polo Ground rally.

Claiming that the Polo Ground rally turned into a sea of people, he said: “You (BNP leaders) should come to the rally to know what popularity is.

About the BNP’s demand of restoration of the caretaker government system, the AL general secretary said: “There will be no amendment to the constitution. You must shun your demand of caretaker government.”
