'Plans finalised to free rivers from grabbers, pollution'

The government has finalised two master plans to free rivers in the capital and port city from grabbers and pollutions.

Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Minister Md Tajul Islam said it to reporters at a briefing at the secretariat on Sunday.

Karnaphuli River in Chattogram and rivers around capital Dhaka will be included in the master plans, the minister said, adding that another objective of the plans is to increase the navigability of the rivers.

Tajul also said that the related government agencies already started their job in this regard.

The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already approved the projects and directed to implement those on due time, added Mr Islam.

In the first master plan, 24 key measures and 180 associate measures have been included to free rivers around Dhaka.

In the second plan, 45 key measures 167 associate measures have been included for Karnaphuli and Halda rivers.

The second plan will be implemented as crash programmes, short-term, medium-term and long-term steps. 

Earlier on June 2016, a committee was formed in an Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) meeting to this end taking the LGRD minister as convener.
