An activist of ruling Awami League (AL) was hacked to death by rivals at Sablat village in Shalikha upazila of Magura district over establishing supremacy in the area early Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Abdur Rahman Sabu, 60, son of Tafsir Molla, reports UNB.

Quoting family members, officer-in-charge of Shalikha Police Station Rabiul Islam said AL-backed chairman of Shaneswargati union parishad Siraj Uddin and rebel candidate Shamshur Rahman had a longstanding dispute over last UP election centring establishing supremacy in the area.

Abdur Rahman, supporter of incumbent chairman, came under attack allegedly by the rival group around 8:00 pm on Monday. The attackers hacked him with sharp weapons indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured.

Later, he was taken to Magura 250-bed Sadar Hospital. He was then shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as per doctors' advice where he succumbed to his injuries at 3:00 am on Tuesday.

The body was taken to Magura from Dhaka last night. A case was filed with Shalikha Police Station. However, none was arrested yet. Additional police have been deployed in the area to avert further trouble.
