Garment workers will receive their monthly wages timely amid the ongoing corona virus crisis, BGMEA president Dr Rubana Huq said.

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) chief made the assurance on Monday through a video message.

“Don’t be afraid, have reliance. All workers will be paid in time,” Ms Huq said adding that the government has assured its all-out support to the country’s readymade garment (RMG) sector.

Explaining the export work orders, she said buyers have cancelled or hold orders worth US$1.5 billion in last four days and uncertainty looms when they will ask for shipments of existing production.

Due to such cancellation and suspension of work orders, more than 1.2 million workers will be affected, she added.

She also requested the BGMEA member mills to include themselves at the trade body’s website to provide information about orders.

Ms Huq urged the member factories not to lose patience, saying prime minister will give her speech on March 25 and they are waiting for her instruction.

“It is not important whether any factory is closed down. But it is most important whether they (workers) will get the wages. They (workers) will receive their wages timely,” she noted.

She called on media not to publish any news that might create panic.

She appealed to global brands to receive the already produced apparel from factories.

Otherwise, she expressed her concern, all factories irrespective of production capacity would be shut in for the next six months.
