Sonaray-Dakumara connecting road under Gabtoli upazila of Bogura district has now turned into a deathtrap as potholes and big ditches at many points have made vehicular movement risky.

Due to the dilapidated condition of the road, accidents occur frequently.

All modes of transports, including three-wheelers, cannot pass through the road as the carpeting of the road has disappeared.

The locals have sought immediate intervention from the authorities concerned for remedy.

“Thousands of passersby using the road undergo untold sufferings”, said pedestrian Abdul Zobbar at Huakua village under the upazila. If this road is not rebuilt or repaired soon, the people of North Gabtali will have to endure a lot of suffering, he added.

It is learnt that the Sonarai-Dakumara road in Gabtali has a strong connection with the district town as well as the highway. Dakumara Haat, the largest cattle market, is situated beside this road. Cattle traders from different districts use the road.

Besides, the government earns huge revenue from the haat.

There are many educational institutions, banks, insurance, NGOs and many government and private offices in the upazila. Hundreds of thousands of vehicles ply this road every day.

About 10km of Sonarai-Dakumara road in Gabtali is under the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED). Except one and a half kilometres, the entire road is in a dilapidated condition.

The paved carpeting of the road has disappeared and small and big holes have been created on many points. Again, due to the accumulation of dirty water in the potholes on the road, speeding vehicles splashed water on the passersby, causing quarrels.

Therefore, the locals and business community have sought immediate intervention of the authorities concerned to take measures for the reconstruction of the road.

Business man Lokman Hossain of the Dakumara area said that due to the dilapidated condition of the road, students, businessmen and people from all walks of life travel with great difficulty. He appealed to the authorities concerned for speedy reconstruction or repair of the road.

Dakshinpara UP chairman Aminul Islam Saiful said if the road was not rebuilt or repaired soon, millions of people in North Gabtali would be cut off. They have sought the immediate intervention of the authorities concerned.

Upazila Engineer Ripon Kumar Saha said, “Necessary steps will be taken in this regard”.

Golam Morshed, Executive Engineer of Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), said, "It is our ongoing process to rebuild or repair various roads that are in trouble or dilapidated. We hope that all the roads in the district will be rebuilt or repaired within two years."
