The Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Tuesday with the New Zealand Ministry of Primary Industries for cooperation on a safe food supply chain.

The MoU was signed virtually by BFSA Chairman Md Abdul Qayum Sarker and New Zealand Ministry of Primary Industries’ Julie Collins, said a press release.

Food Ministry Secretary Dr Mosammat Nazmanara Khanum and New Zealand High Commissioner to New Delhi David Pine also took part at the MoU signing ceremony virtually.

Ms Khanum said the collaboration between the two countries might help develop a sound and safe food chain.

David Pine said it would benefit the people of both the two countries.

Abdul Qayum Sarker said the concept of safe food is now an emerging phenomenon and the government has put emphasis on supplying safe and healthy food for people.

He said New Zealand's experience might play a role in strengthening the safe food system of Bangladesh.

However, under the MoU, the two organisations could exchange information on laws and regulations, risk assessment, monitoring, establishment of food laboratories, food borne diseases, regional and international food quality improvement, public health assistance, electronic certification, study tours and others.
