THE 200-year-old Dhaka Central Jail has been shifted to its new premises at Keraniganj. It has been a praiseworthy move by the government and fulfilled a long-time demand of the common people. As the central jail was so long located in the heart of the old city, unbearable traffic gridlock was a regular feature for the old city dwellers. The traffic pressure will be much lower now and the old city will be a better place to live. I hope the authority will build a green and spacious park there so that the old city dwellers can have a breathing space in an otherwise overcrowded city. The government now should take a long term plan to utilize the space left after shifting of the central jail.
