A police official has been suspended for his attempt to snatch Tk 0.3 million from a local Awami League leader at Gurpatti in Shibganj municipality of Chapainawabganj.

A probe body has also been formed with Additional Superintendent of Police Mahbub Alam Khan as its head to look into the incident.

Police said AL leader Mainul Islam came out of Shibganj branch of Sonali Bank around 4:15pm on Tuesday withdrawing Tk 0.3 million. Three people, led by Sub-Inspector (SI) of Shibganj Police Station Shahidul Islam, intercepted him at Gurpatti and tried to take away his bag full of money after beating him.

Locals rescued Mainul and caught Yusuf and Ainal, two police informants, and gave them a good thrashing.

On information, Officer-in-Charge of the police station Habibul Islam along with a team rushed in and rescued them, reports UNB.

Later, the AL leader filed a case with the police station against Yusuf Ali (23), son of Munirul Islam of Doulatbari village in Shibganj upazila, and Ainal (34), son of Nazimuddin, hailing from Niyamatpur upazila in Naogaon, on charge of attempting to snatch Tk 3 lakh.

Superintendent of Police TM Mozahidul Islam said SI Shahidul Islam was suspended on Tuesday night over the incident. “Further action will be taken after receiving the probe report,” he added.

However, Shahidul said they intercepted Mainul being tipped off that he was carrying Yaba tablets in his bag.
