The government is set to launch a countrywide truck sale of key essential items on May 16 to keep prices within people's purchasing power, officials say.

The state-owned Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) will sell essential commodities in different parts of the country using more than 250 to 300 trucks, they add.

Sugar, soybean oil and red lentil are likely to sell through trucks. Prices of soybean oil is fixed and it will remain at Tk 110.

Sugar, lentil and gram per kilo may sell at earlier fixed prices. But soybean oil price may be revised because of a rise in its domestic rates recently.

The decision on revision will be made at a meeting to be held before the truck-sale programme starts, according to a source.

The sales will continue until May 30.

The TCB is also expected to start soybean sales drive at subsidised rates for an estimated 10-million card-holding families from June.
