Tourists visit Sylhet spots amid lockdown

SYLHET: A good number of visitors were seen moving on the tourist spots in Sylhet during the Eid vacation and amid lockdown.

Many of the visitors with their family members and friends in groups were seen in the tea gardens in Sylhet city suburban areas on Thursday and Friday.

Trader Aftab Hossain of the city suburb Alampur with three of his friends were taking photo shots and said, "We are in the Luckatoora tea garden just on a short trip on Eid holiday. We are already exhausted in houses during the strict lockdown for weeks".

Among the visitors, two young boys from Sylhet city drowned at Teknagul of the Bisnakandi area Thursday as they along with many others went there on pleasure trip. The bodies were recovered Friday afternoon and sent those to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College for post mortem.

After the post mortem bodies of Sagar and Rubel of the city's Gowaipara Mollika Residential area were handed over to the families on Saturday, said the officer in charge of Gowainghat police station Porimal Deb.

Madrasa student from Tangail Imran Ahmed, 18, drowned in the Piain river at Jafflong as he, along with friends were having bath. His body was recovered Saturday.

Similarly, there was a rush of visitors on the Hakaluki Haor in Moulvibazar and Sylhet and on the Tanguar haor in Sunamganj as well. Most of them were also ignoring the health restrictions.

Over 8000 visitors of different age groups visited the Hakaluki haor areas during the two days till Friday evening, forest officials said. They moved around for hours by rented boats.

The Tahirpur Upazila officials on Friday fined 17 motorised boats as they were transporting tourists on the local haors. The mobile courts fined Taka 23,300 from the boatmen for violating lockdown restrictions by travelling in the Rokti river and Tanguar Haor, an official said.

Besides, four tourist groups were fined Taka 20,000 for violating restrictions on travelling on the Tanguar haor on Thursday. Several hundred visitors were also seen moving by boats on the haors and rivers during the last two days, a number of locals said.
