Transplantation of T-Aman paddy seedlings nears completion

SYLHET, Sept 25: Farmers in Sylhet division are about to finish transplanting T-Aman paddy seedlings during the current season.

Already the target is surpassed, but on some pocket areas the transplantation would be done this week.

An official at the Divisional office of DAE said seedbed was made on a total of 23,850 hectares of land against the previously set target at 20,421 hectares in the region.

According to the district reports, 138,460 hectares in Sylhet had been cultivated while it is 97,985 hectares in Moulvibazar, 76,400 hectares in Habiganj and 76,240 hectares in Sunamganj.

However, the total cultivated area includes 3,24,562 hectares of high yielding varieties and 64,523 hectares of local varieties.

The division's target of rice production is set at 9,73,793 tonnes. It includes 31,97,832 tonnes of rice in Sylhet, 2,65,434 tonnes of rice in Moulvibazar, 2,05,060 tonnes of rice in Habiganj and 1,83,517 tonnes of rice in Sunamganj district.

Farmers in most of the areas had already cultivated about 3,72,288 hectares of land as yet, informed additional director of DAE division level office Md Altabur Rahman.

The farming is well as yet with a favourable weather, he added, it would continue for two weeks in some areas.

During the last year's T-Aman season farming of the crop was also a good one amid a good weather. 

Although the target was higher of 3,87,150 hectares last year, the crop was cultivated on 3,75,800 hectares in four districts of the division, the official said, per hectare yield stood at about 2.8 tonnes from high yielding varieties and 1.6 metric tonnes from local varieties.

However, the farmers in different areas couldn't recover the flood damages while many others failed replanting their lands due to the longer duration of floods.

Severe and prolonged floods that season had damaged T-Aman crop on 5,650 hectares, affecting a total of 43,782 farmers in the region. The weather behavious is good yet this time.
