The proposal to impose 5 per cent value added tax (VAT) on online shopping was printed mistakenly on the script of finance minister's budget speech.

Chairman of National Board of Revenue (NBR) Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan came up with the statement while responding to a question at a post-budget news conference in Dhaka on Friday.

“It was printed mistakenly. We dropped the decision,” he said, reports bdnews24.com.

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, Information Minister Hasanul Huq Inu, Prime Minister's advisor Mashiur Rahman were also present at the stage of the press conference.

The government has reversed a plan to impose 5 per cent VAT on online shopping.

According to Finance Minister AMA Muhith’s budget speech delivered on Thursday, 5 per cent VAT was levied on online shopping.

Muhith has also proposed 5 per cent VAT on digital ride-sharing service providers such as Uber and Pathao, which promoted criticism from users.
