BD’s active Covid-19 cases second highest in Asia

Bangladesh has now the second-highest active coronavirus cases in Asia after India, according to the worldometer data.

With a total of 101,657 active cases, Bangladesh also occupies the ninth position in the world while India has 5,87,908 active cases.

In the last 24 hours ending Wednesday morning, Bangladesh recorded 2,654 fresh coronavirus cases, taking the total tally of cases to 2,46,674, according to official data.

The deadly virus also took the lives of 33 more people during the period, raising the death toll to 3,267.

DGHS additional director general (admin) Dr Nasima Sultana revealed the figures during the regular virtual bulletin on Wednesday.

She said a total of 11,160 tests were done in the 24-hour period and 2,654 of them were found positive for Covid-19, registering the detection rate of 23.78 per cent.

So far, a total of 12,12,416 samples were tested across the country and the overall detection rate is 20.35 per cent, she added.

Of the 33 new deaths, 25 were males and eight females, with the fatality rate being 1.32 per cent, said the DGHS official.

Of the 33 victims, two were aged between 31 and 40, four between 41 and 50, eight between 51 and 60, ten between 61 and 70, six between 71 and 80 and one between 81 and 90 while two others were over 90 years old, she said.

As per the DGHS data, 1,890 patients recovered in the 24-hour period, taking the total cases of recovery to 1,41,750.

At present, 83 laboratories are conducting coronavirus tests across the country.

According the DGHS data, some 11,380 general beds, out of a total of 15,240 for coronavirus patients, in different healthcare facilities across the country remained empty.

Also, 246 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds, out of 548, are empty.

In terms of active Covid-19 cases, Bangladesh occupies the second position in Asia and the ninth position in the world, according to the worldometer data.

Regionally, Bangladesh is followed by Philippines with 47,587 active cases and Indonesia with 37,530 active cases.

In the region, countries like Iran, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have higher numbers of total Covid-19 cases than Bangladesh but the numbers of active cases are lower than Bangladesh.

According to the worldometer data, Bangladesh is the 16th hardest-hit nation in the world.

The deadly virus killed over 0.7 million people globally.
