BGB seizes 400,000 pieces of yaba pills worth Tk 120m in Cox’s bazar

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized as many as 400,000 pieces of contraband yaba pills worth Tk 120 million (12 crore) in Cox’s Bazar.

In line with the government’s 'Zero Tolerance' policy against drugs, the BGB as part of its regular duty, conducted a special anti-drug operation despite there is a pandemic situation in place, said a press statement of BGB on Thursday.

The BGB Cox's Bazar Battalion (34 BGB) of Rejupara BOP recovered the pills in the drive on Wednesday.

The BGB members were tipped off about a smuggling bid from Myanmar on Wednesday evening and a patrol team of Rejupara BOP took position at Chakbaitha Chikanpatar Bagan in Ratnapalang UP No. 2 under Ukhia upazila of Cox's Bazar district.

At around 8.30 pm, a group of smugglers numbering 8-10 were seen coming towards Bangladesh from the border area and when they were challenged by the BGB patrol, the smugglers started firing at the law enforcers, the statement read.

The BGB team also responded by returning fire. The smugglers at one point fled the scene towards Myanmar through the hilly bush leaving a bag behind.

The patrol team later searched the bag left by the drug pedlars and recovered approximately 400,000 pieces of Burmese yaba.

Legal action is being taken in this regard.
