Hasan Mahmud accuses CJ of protecting ‘corrupt person’

Awami League leader Dr Hasan Mahmud on Saturday accused Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha of protecting a corrupt person and referred the article 5 of Anti Corruption Commission Act in this regard.

“The person who indulges in corruption and the person who patronises and gives shelter to a corrupt person are equally guilty,” he said claiming that the Chief Justice is hampering ACC’s activities through writing a letter to the ACC to protect Justice Joynul Abedin, reports UNB.

He alleged that Justice Joynul Abedin, who headed the judicial commission formed to probe the August 21 grenade attack on an Awami League rally, submitted an ‘imaginary’ investigation report at that time.

The ruling party publication and publicity secretary and former minister also urged the government to take action against BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain for bringing them to justice accusing them of delivering offensive comments on August 21 attacks.

The Awami League leader made the remarks while addressing a discussion marking August 21 attack organised by Bangladesh Shadhinota Parishad at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU).

While the ACC is investigating against Joynul Abedin, unfortunately, under the directives of the Chief Justice, the Deputy Registrar of the High Court wrote a letter to the Commission to stop the investigation, said Hasan Mahmud.

Justice Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik said Pakistani army was defeated in 1971 while the people of the country joined the Liberation War under Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s leadership.

On the 16th amendment to the constitution, he said the observation made by the Chief Justice is far away from the context.

“The person who doesn’t believe in Bangabandhu’s single leadership, and even was a member of Peace Committee in 1971 that he himself confessed has no right to live in this country,” Manik said.

He also said, “The Chief Justice should leave for Pakistan resigning from his post.”

Former State Minister for Home Advocate Shamsul Haque Tuku, organising secretary Bangladesh Jubo Mohila League Salma Bhuiya and Barrister Jakir Ahmed, among others, spoke at the programme.
