Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said voters will reject the BNP in the upcoming national election as it has refused to accept the outcome of Khulna city polls in which people voted enthusiastically.

Quader spoke at a reception in Manipur School and College in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Quader responded to criticism of the election by the BNP after Awami League-backed Talukdar Abdul Khalek was elected as the mayor of Khulna city.

“Everyone said it was a fair and neutral election, save for some stray incidents. Only the BNP is opposing the election as the party itself has a negative attitude of disapproving everything,” he said.

Khalek defeated BNP’s Nazrul Islam Manju on Tuesday, sparking angry reactions from BNP stalwarts.

Khalek bagged 174,891 votes while Manju got 109,251 votes.

Manju, one of BNP’s central leaders, accused the ruling party of rigging votes in at least 100 centres and demanded a fresh election.

Also, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, senior joint secretary general of BNP, rejected the election outcome through a press conference in Dhaka on Wednesday and demanded resignation of Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda.

“They are rejecting the decision of those who have voted for Khalek. They sound like a broken record player always spreading falsehood and complaining to foreigners,” Quader said, reports bdnews24.com.
