DSE, CSE shine amid cautious trading

Stocks extended the gaining streak for the third straight session on Thursday as investors continued their buying binge amid cautious trading.

DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), settled at 5,265, advancing 22.75 points or 0.43 per cent over the previous day.

The investors were active from the beginning of the session and key index rose about 35 points within first half of the trading session. But rest of the session eroded some early gains.

Market operators said despite the market edged higher many investors followed cautious stance amid growing political tension surrounding national elections.

The two other indices finished higher. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, advanced 5.86 points to finish at 1,842 and the DSES (Shariah) index closed 4.48 points to settle at 1,209.

Turnover, another important indicator of the market, remained low as the total turnover amounting to Tk 4.62 billion, which was 16 per cent higher than the previous day’s turnover of Tk 3.98 billion.

A total number of 123,653 trades were executed in the day’s trading session with trading volume of 116.11 million shares and mutual fund units.

The market cap of DSE increased to Tk 3,809 billion which was Tk 3,794 billion in the previous day.

The gainers took a modest lead over the losers as out of 341 issues traded, 176 closed higher, 115 ended lower and 50 issues remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

Khulna Power Company topped the day’s turnover chart with shares worth Tk 181 million changing hands, closely followed by United Power, BDCOM Online, Intech and BATBC.

Anlimayarn Dyeing was the day’s best performer, posting a gain of 9.85 per cent while Dulamia Cotton Mills was the day’s worst loser, shedding 8.07 per cent.

The port city bourse CSE ended higher with the CSE All Share Price Index – CASPI – gaining 91 points to settle at 16,138 while the Selective Categories Index – CSCX –advancing 55 points to finish at 9,763.

Here too, the gainers beat the losers as 133 issues closed higher, 74 ended lower and 41 remained unchanged.

The port city bourse traded 8.71 million shares and mutual fund units worth nearly Tk 467 million in turnover.
