Stocks break two-day losing streak

Stocks posted marginal gain on Sunday, the first day of this month, snapping a two-day losing streak, as some investors showed their buying appetite on sector-wise shares.

Market analysts said investors took position on sector specific issues as some companies showed better earnings in last calendar year.

After witnessing volatility in the first half of the trading session, later half of the session went up steadily as investors showed their buying spree.

At the end of the session, DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), went up by 11.24 points or 0.19 per cent to settle at 5,723, after losing 44 points in the past two sessions.

The two other indices also edged up. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, advanced 3.77 points to finish at 2002 and the DSES (Shariah) index gained 3.27 points to settle at 1,317.

Turnover, another important indicator of the market, stood at Tk 6.62 billion, which was 3.92 per cent lower than the previous day’s turnover of Tk 6.89 billion.

A total number of 140,108 trades were executed in the day’s trading session with trading volume of 146.13 million shares and mutual fund units.

The market-cap of the DSE fell slightly to Tk 4,147 billion, from Tk 4,150 billion in the previous session.

The losers, however, took a modest lead over the gainers as out of 340 issues traded, 153 closed lower, 139 ended higher and 48 issues remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

Monno Ceramic Industries topped the turnover chart with shares worth Tk 387 million changing hands, closely followed by Singer Bangladesh, Premier Bank, Fortune Shoes and Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company.

Intech Limited was the day’s best performer, posting a gain of 8.04 per cent while Sonargaon Textiles was the worst loser, losing 7.30 per cent.

The port city bourse Chittagong Stock Exchange also backed to the green with the CSE All Share Price Index – CASPI – advancing 28 points to settle at 17,501 while the Selective Categories Index – CSCX –gaining 16 points to finish at 10,602.

The gainers beat losers as 118 issues closed higher, 95 ended lower and 41 remained unchanged.

The port city bourse traded 19.96 million shares and mutual fund units worth Tk 491 million in turnover.
