Stocks open nearly flat amid dull trading

Stocks remained almost flat in early trading on Wednesday as investors’ concerns over the worsening Covid-19 situation and the floor price limitation kept the market nearly inactive.

Within first 30 minutes of trading, DSEX, the key index of the DSE, saw a 0.40 point gain while the Selective Category Index of the port city bourse advanced 0.46 points at 11:00am when the report was filed.

The DSEX went up by 0.40 point or 0.01 per cent to stand at 3,962 points at that time.

Two other indices also almost stagnated till then. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips advanced 1.01 points to 1,330. The DSE Shariah Index (DSES) gained 0.28 point to stand at 918 points till then.

Turnover, one of the important indicators of the market, stood at only Tk 122 million when the report was filed at 11:00am.

Market operators said lack of institutional buyers coupled with the current floor price limitation is preventing many investors from buying and selling shares, taking the market in almost stagnated situation.

Most of the shares remained stuck at the trading floor due to the floor price limitation.

Of the issues traded till then, only 10 advanced, 13 declined and 135 remained unchanged.

GlaxoSmithKline was the most traded stock till filing of this report with shares worth Tk 42 million changing hands, followed by Beximco Pharma, Beximco, Central Pharma and Square Pharma.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also saw a nominal gain till then with its All Shares Price Index (CASPI) gaining 1.03 points to reach at 11,245 and the Selective Categories Index (CSCX) advancing 0.46 points to finish at 6,813 at 11:00am

Of the issues traded till then, 7 gained, 6 declined and 20 remained unchanged on the CSE with turnover of Tk 5.40 million.
