Ten cos account for 37pc DSE transactions

United Power tops turnover chart

The ten most-traded firms captured nearly 37 per cent of transactions on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) last week that ended on Thursday, with the United Power Generation & Distribution Company leading the chart.

Market analysts said investors were active on the United Power shares amid expectations of a positive quarterly earnings declaration as the January-March quarter has just ended.

The company topped the turnover chart in every session of the week on the prime bourse.

The United Power posted a modest earnings growth in the period of July-December 2018.

Its earnings per share (EPS) (separate) rose 15.18 per cent to Tk 5.31 for July-December 2018. The EPS (separate) was Tk 4.61 for the same period in 2017.

According to statistics available with the DSE, 5.02 million shares of United Power were traded last week, generating a turnover worth Tk 2.10 billion, making up 10.05 per cent of the DSE’s total turnover.

The total turnover on the DSE stood at Tk 20.12 billion last week, up from Tk 14.46 billion in the week before.

The power generation company’s share price closed at Tk 385.40 on Thursday, the last session of the week, losing 4.39 per cent over the previous week.

Its share price traded between Tk 154.10 and Tk 422.50 in the last one year.

The United Power, listed on the DSE in 2015, disbursed 90 per cent cash and 20 per cent stock dividend for the year ended on June 30, 2018.

The company’s paid-up capital is Tk 4.79 billion, authorised capital is Tk 8.0 billion and the total number of securities is 479.08 million.

BATBC came second on the turnover chart, with shares worth Tk 1.22 billion changing hands last week. The company’s share closed at Tk 387.90 on Thursday, gaining 1.83 per cent.

Grameenphone clinched the third spot, with shares worth Tk 845 million changing hands. The largest market cap company’s share price plunged 4.78 per cent to close at Tk 387.90 on Thursday.

Monno Ceramic Industries emerged the fourth, with shares worth Tk 805 million changing hands. The company’s share closed at Tk 347.70 each, losing 2.27 per cent over the previous week.

Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company notched the fifth spot, with shares worth Tk 620 million changing hands. The state-run company’s share price rose 4.30 per cent to close at Tk 159.90 each on Thursday.

The turnover of Fortune Shoes was Tk 460 million. The company’s share price soared 7.20 per cent to close at Tk 35.70 each.

Brac Bank featured a turnover of Tk 435 million. The bank’s share closed at Tk 77.70 each, advancing 0.52 per cent over the previous week.

The turnover of Alif Industries was Tk 365 million. The company’s share closed at Tk 69.70 on Thursday, advancing 1.16 per cent over the previous week.

Singer Bangladesh featured a turnover of Tk 323 million. The company’s share closed at Tk 185.20 each, losing 3.59 per cent over the previous week.

Monno Jute Stafflers also made its way to the top 10 turnover chart, with shares of Tk 318 million changing hands. The company’s share price fell 7.68 per cent to close at Tk 1,629.40 each.
