Ten cos snare 28pc transaction

The heavyweight banking sector dominated the Dhaka bourse's transaction chart Tuesday while top 10 traded companies accounted for 28 per cent of the total turnover.

Four banks made their way to the top 10 turnover chart, with Islami Bank leading the chart. City Bank, Shahjalal Islami Bank and Brac Bank were also included in the top turnover list.

Brokers said the investors chased the banking sector issues just ahead of year-closing, anticipating positive earnings in the outgoing calendar year that ends in December.

The total turnover on the premier bourse reached Tk 3.71 billion, 3.06 per cent up from the previous day's Tk 3.60 billion.

The most active shares in terms of value included Islami Bank, City Bank, Alif Manufacturing Company, Square Pharmaceuticals, Shahjalal Islami Bank, Lafarge Surma Cement, Brac Bank, Nahee Aluminum, Padma Life Insurance and National Tubes.

According to statistics available with the DSE, about 4.71 million shares of Islami Bank were traded, generating a turnover of Tk 166 million which was 4.47 per cent of the total transaction.

The bank's share price hovered between Tk 34.50 and Tk 35.80, before closing at Tk 35.70, advancing 3.18 per cent over the previous session.

City Bank came next, with shares of Tk 146 million changing hands. The bank's share price fell 1.14 per cent to close at Tk 52.10.

Alif Manufacturing Company notched the third spot, with shares of Tk 113 million changing hands. Its share price ended 9.75 per cent higher at Tk 27 each.

Square Pharmaceuticals emerged as the fourth with shares of Tk 110 million changing hands. The second largest market cap company's share price settled at Tk 298.40, losing 0.09 per cent.

Shahjalal Bank featured a turnover of Tk 97 million. The bank's share price rose 0.94 per cent to close at Tk 32.30.

The turnover of Lafarge Surma was Tk 96 million. The multinational cement maker's share price ended 9.88 per cent higher at Tk 65.60.

Brac Bank featured a turnover of Tk 89 million. The bank's share price advanced 0.66 per cent to close at Tk 107.

The turnover of newly listed Nahee Aluminum was Tk 85 million. Its share price fell 0.12 per cent to close at Tk 81.50, after witnessing 716 per cent rise on the debut trading day on Sunday last.

Padma Life Insurance featured a turnover of Tk 71 million. The life insurer's share price shed 0.77 per cent to close at Tk 51.60.

National Tubes also made its way to the top ten turnover chart, with shares of Tk 64 million changing hands. Its share price closed 4.33 per cent lower at Tk 128.20.
