ASA, a non-government organisation (NGO), has paid an amount of Tk 12.2 million in value added tax (VAT) on Monday, following a demand notice of the VAT authority, said a statement of Dhaka West VAT zone.

The NGO apprised the commissioner of the zone after depositing the money to the public exchequer.

Talking to the FE, Dhaka West VAT zone Commissioner Moinul Khan said the NGO has paid the VAT within the given timeframe.

"The NGO has responded promptly to the VAT authority's notice. We are convinced that the VAT was not evaded by the NGO intentionally," he said.

Earlier, the VAT West zone's audit team had detected a number of VAT-applicable transactions, but ASA did not deposit the tax.

They found unpaid VAT on office rent, purchase of furniture and different products, services and maintenance cost.

The audit team scrutinised the NGO's business operations and transactions for last three years from January 2015 to July 2018.

They submitted a report to the commissioner with the findings. According to the audit report, ASA had evaded Tk 12 million in VAT.

ASA will have to pay penal tax at a rate of 2.0 per cent as per the section 37 of the VAT law.
