Local biscuit and bread manufacturers sought policy guidelines from the government for sustainable development of their industry.

Bangladesh Auto Biscuit and Bread Manufacturers Association (BABBMA) made the plea at a meeting on Thursday with Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun.

It was held at the ministry office in the city. BABBMA president Shafiqur Rahman Bhuiyan and adviser Sharif M.Afzal Hossain, among others, were present.

Manufacturers said they already sent necessary recommendations to the ministry on the policy. If formulated, the policy would make it easier to ensure the quality of these dry foods.

The meeting discussed the way to build a safe food industry as well as diversification, enhancement of export and improving the quality of bread and biscuits.

The association leaders also said a section of traders were marketing adulterated biscuits and bread using well-known companies' trademarks. Real entrepreneurs and consumers were being affected following this forgery.

They requested for giving the highest level of attention while approving trademarks and giving permission to market the products. The industries minister assured the manufacturers that ensuring an eco-friendly industry and safe food was the commitment of his government.

Bangladesh Agro-Processors' Association (BAPA) also met the minister immediately after the meeting with the bakers. They discussed the possibilities and difficulties of agro-processed industry.

They also mentioned that Bangladesh earned foreign currencies by exporting the agro-processed foods equivalent to Tk 55.00 billion in last fiscal year.
