BGMEA fears student movement, transport situation may hinder apparel sector

BGMEA Monday expressed concerns regarding the transport situations stating that the stalemate might result in losses for the apparel sector as they’ll need to opt for expensive modes of shipment.

The garment manufacturer’s trade organisation said such situation will hamper the sector as well as the image of the country.

“We have been noticing inadequate transports on the roads and highways though students have returned from streets, creating immense suffering for people,” said Md Siddiqur Rahman president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association.

“As a result, a good number of factories would have stock lot while many have to force to make costly air shipments,” said he.

The readymade garment sector is facing most difficulties, said Siddiqur adding that export import of RMG products to and from Dhaka to Chattogram has been hampered.

The apex apparel trade body’s chief said it while speaking at a press conference held at the BGMEA headquarters in the city.

BGMEA organised the conference on the prevailing situation at the backdrop of students’ movement demanding road safety.

Subsequently the transport workers have stopped operating vehicles on the roads in fear of getting into trouble.

Containers remained stuck at ports while finished products are at factories, said the BGMEA president.

The apparel makers are expecting work orders for next season in August but buyers are cancelling their visit to Dhaka due to the prevailing situation, he noted.

Moreover, many investors are coming to Bangladesh, added the BGMEA boss.

“We don’t want any such situation that hampers the normal day to day life and economic activities,” said Mr Rahman.
