The government has invited bids from potential entrepreneurs to build the country's first waste-based power plant to generate around 5.0 megawatts (MW) of electricity.

The state-run Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has invited bids from the private sector companies to submit their proposals by September 20 to implement the waste-based power plant project.

The plant is planned to be built under build, own, operate (BOO) basis at Jalkuri of Narayanganj.

BPDB will purchase electricity from the waste-based power plant for 20 years.

The organisation inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) on March 21 to utilise some 500 tonnes of solid waste for generating electricity.

Officials said some 900 MW of electricity can be generated from the solid wastes being generated in the capital.

Currently around 9,000 tonnes of solid wastes are being generated daily in Dhaka, and to produce 1.0 MW of electricity some 80-100 tonnes of wastes are required.

The Power Division under the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources has a plan to implement a series of waste-based power projects in all city corporations riding on the success of the Narayanganj project, the officials also said.

Several waste-based power plant projects are planned to be implemented at Keraniganj off the capital and in Kushtia, they added.
