The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) Limited will honour local businesses for their remarkable contributions to the export earnings.

The businesses will be awarded under five categories in the eighth edition of the 'Export Excellence Awards' ceremony this year.

Officials of the multinational financial institution made the announcement at a press conference at a city hotel on Tuesday.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the bank's Bangladesh operations Francois de Maricourt, its Deputy CEO and Country Head of Wholesale Banking Md Mahbub ur Rahman and Country Head of Communications Talukdar Noman Anwar spoke on the occasion.

Six Bangladeshi companies will be awarded for their success in export earnings.

Diversity, corporate social responsibility, sustainable business practices and governance strengths will also be considered while selecting the winners.

The first category (Exporter of the Year) is classified into two groups.

Companies with annual export turnover of more than $100 million will be placed in Group A and companies with turnover below $100 million in Group B.

Businesses with annual export turnover of at least $10 million will come under the second category: 'Supply Chain and Backward Linkage: Apparel'.

Non-RMG or Textiles businesses with annual export turnover of $5.0 million and above will be honoured under third category: 'Traditional and Emerging Sectors'.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SME), except RMG or textiles, having annual export turnover below $5.0 million will come under the fourth category.

A new category called 'Excellence in Import Substitution' has been added to the award list this year to honour oraganisations that manufacture import-substitute goods worth US$ 10 million or more in a year.

An independent panel of judges will select the winners and the award giving ceremony is expected to be held in September.

Speaking on the occasion, Francois de Maricourt said Bangladesh's economic growth in recent years has been creating an example to other countries.

Bangladeshi entrepreneurs are playing a vital role in achieving this success, he said.

And the HSBC has been supporting them through various initiatives besides regular banking operations, he added.

"For the last eight years, we have provided a platform for Bangladeshi exporters to showcase their capabilities and celebrate their global potential," he said about the award.

A HSBC statement said that nomination forms and other details of the programme are available at 'business.hsbc.com.bd/eea'.

Organisations or companies can also nominate others for any categories of the programme. The nomination phase is open until August 31, it added.
