ICMAB int'l confce on SDGs on Sept 23

A daylong international conference on sustainable development goals (SDGs) will be held on September 23 with intent to create awareness among stakeholders.

The Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Bangladesh (ICMAB) will host the event at a city hotel.

The conference is expected to play a pivotal role in identifying the challenges and way forward to achieve the goals set by the United Nations.

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith is scheduled to inaugurate the conference as the chief guest.

ICMAB president Mohammed Salim made the announcement at a press conference at the institute's headquarters in the capital on Wednesday.

ICMAB executive director Md Mahbub Ul Alam and director Nazmus Salehin also attended the briefing.

Addressing the media, Mr Salim said the cost and management accounting professionals are involved with all 17 SDGs through various means.

"The conference is aimed at creating awareness among the stakeholders, including accounting professionals, of their role and responsibilities in achieving the SDGs for the country," he added.

Thanks to the SDGs, the ICMAB chief said, corporate reporting system will change drastically, resulting in a dramatic change in the corporate life of accountants.

Sustainability reporting and integrated reporting are likely to replace mainstream reporting, he mentioned.

The ICMAB chief said sustainability reporting is involved with the key SDG issues like the environment and society in addition to estimating profits.

His institute has initiated to organise the conference with the participation of international scholars to help achieve the development goals.

The International Federation of Accountants is also putting emphasis on the professional accountants' role in supporting the government to achieve the SDGs.

According to organisers, the theme of the conference is 'Achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Challenges and way forward'.

It will conduct six sessions: role of professional accountants, changing corporate reporting landscape, development partners' role, women's participation, economic preparedness and role of information technology and quality education in achieving SDGs.

More than 40 experts from home and abroad will take part in the sessions.

Around 400 participants, including government officials, corporate practitioners, accountants, other professionals, development partners, technologists and women entrepreneurs will join the event.
