IN most countries of the world drink-driving is considered a serious crime and an accident leading to death of a person due to drink driving is looked upon as a palpable homicide. Recently two people died when they were knocked down by a car with a drunken youth at the steering during the Eid festival. Two other persons were also injured. It was a sad and unfortunate incident and a brutal crime at the same time. Similar incidents do not occur much too often in our country. But they do occur and we finish our duty by criticizing the offenders and hardly bringing any one to justice. Drinking and driving at the same time is an unforgivable offence from whatever angle we look at it and the offenders must get highest punishment under law. Drinking unsettles a man and makes him tipsy and thus driving in a condition like that is often too risky.
In this case under discussion, the car was being driven at a very high speed and suddenly the drunk driver lost his control and rammed into four people on the road. The police have a suspect on their list and they are on the hunt to arrest him.
In our neighbouring country India, 70 per cent of road accidents happen due to drink-driving. In our country, some children from well off families are alcoholic and they are found driving expensive cars while drinking along with friends. Rich parents of these young men are busy making money and hardly care about what their children are doing. A moment of carelessness while driving may lead to fatal accidents involving pedestrians and innocent people nearby. A car in the hands of careless young drivers may prove deadly for many. It is high time we realized the importance of safe driving and make our roads and highways safer.
