At least six children were killed and one was rescued Tuesday after a car carrying them plunged into a roadside pond in India's eastern state of Bihar, officials said.

The dead had been identified as Golu Kumar, 8, Naina Kumari, 8, Mithun Kumar, 10, Karan Kumar, 10, Ajay Kumar, 12, and Nitish Rishidev, 14, according to station house officer.

"This morning a car carrying 10 people plunged into a pond after which six children were killed on the spot and one was rescued. He has been hospitalised immediately," Himanshu Sharma, Araria district magistrate told the media over telephone. "Three people, who were inside the car came out unhurt."

According to Sharma, people inside the car were returning after attending a marriage ceremony.

"We are being told the driver tried to avoid hitting a child on road but couldn't control the vehicle and plunged into pond," he said. "The deaths have taken place because the children couldn't come out of the submerged vehicle."

Following the accident, police teams rushed to the spot and retrieved bodies from the car with the help of locals, reports Xinhua.
