Five die as car runs over sleeping labourers in India

At least five labourers were killed and nine others injured after an over-speeding car ran over them in northern Indian state of Haryana on Wednesday, police said.

The labourers were sleeping on an overbridge in Hisar, about 166 km northwest of Delhi, the Indian capital city, reports Xinhua.

"Early today at 2:00am (local time), five people were killed when a car ran over them on the Jindal railway overbridge here. Nine people, including the car occupant, were injured in the accident," a police official said.

According to police, the labourers engaged in repairing and carpeting of the bridge were sleeping on the pavement.

The victims were from Bihar's Saharsa and Khagaria districts.

The injured ones have been admitted at the nearest hospital.

Police have registered a case and ordered investigations to ascertain the reason behind the accident.
