One person was killed and nearly 300 buildings were damaged when a magnitude 5.7 earthquake jolted eastern Indonesia on weekend, said Indonesian disaster management agency on Tuesday.

Spokesperson of the agency Sutopo Purwo Nugroho disclosed that a total of 12 churches, one school building and 281 houses were devastated after the Saturday's quake.

The quake also forced nearly 500 people to flee home and take shelters at safer grounds, the official unveiled.

The quake triggered panic and black out in the area, said Sutopo.

The earthquake centered at 37 km northwest of North Maluku province with the depth at 10 km under sea bed, he said.

Several weaker aftershocks were felt after the main shock, reports Xinhua news agency.
