At least six Islamic State (IS) militants were killed after NATO and US-led coalition forces launched airstrikes on IS hideouts in Afghanistan's eastern province of Nangarhar Sunday night, authorities said Monday.

"The strikes launched by coalition's pilotless aircrafts occurred in Gurguri and Chongai areas of Haska Mina district overnight. As a result six members of IS were killed," the provincial government said in a statement.

The mountainous province, 120 km east of Kabul, has been the scene of clashes between security forces and IS militants from time to time, Xinhua news agency reported.

The clashes have forced thousands of villagers to flee to safer places.

The IS group, which emerged in Nangarhar in early 2015, has yet to make comments on the report.
