Sacrifice of animals on Eid-ul-Azha had left Dhaka city authorities with 22,000 tonnes of waste to manage, according to South Dhaka Mayor Sayeed Khokon.
Cleaners were able to remove ninety per cent of the total waste, he told a press conference on Sunday.
Mayor Sayeed Khokon held the briefing on Dhaka's two city corporations in the absence of North Dhaka Mayor Annisul Haq, who is taking treatment in UK.
Cleaning trucks of South Dhaka took 3,000 trips to remove 14,000 tonnes of waste, he said. Another 8,270 tonnes of waste was removed from North Dhaka on 1,686 trips.
"We said we'd remove the waste before 24 hours. We have that capacity," the mayor said.
Around 1,700 cleaners worked on Eid day to remove the waste. Mayor Khokon earlier said that 475,000 animals may be slaughtered during Eid.
The city had designated special zones, 625 in south and 549 in north, for carrying out the ritual but many residents ignored the instruction to slaughter their animals in neighbourhood alleys, according to bdnews24.com.
