Laptop sales have increased immensely from 26,000 units to over 500,000 units since 2008, said the organisers of laptop fair.

They also expressed their satisfaction of selling more laptops than target.

“We have been exceeding the sales target for the last five years,” said one of the organisers of the laptop fair Muhammad Khan.

“We are able to prepare and sell around 5,000 laptops in the three-day long fair,” he added.

Khan also pointed the discount offered as a driving force for the number of sales in the fair.

Bangladesh Computer Samity (BCS) President Ali Ashfaq said the demand for laptop has increased as students and corporate offices have started using laptops for work mobility.

Moreover, experts cited the government’s recent initiative to slash import duty on computer hardware as a prime factor to help the sector grow further.

Earlier on Thursday, the Science and Technology Minister Yafes Osman inaugurated the three-day long laptop fair at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in Dhaka.

A total of 27 stalls, one mega pavilion and 14 mini pavilions have been set up at the fair.

Entry fee for the fair, which will remain open from 10am to 8pm, is Tk 30.

Students and people with disabilities will enjoy free access to the fair.

Expo Maker is organising the event. This is the 19th edition of the fair.
