Bangladesh is one of the least committed countries in the world to reduce the growing income disparity, according to a report released by Oxfam International on Tuesday.
The country ranked 148 among 157 nations included in the Commitment to Reducing Inequality (CRI) Index-2018.
Jointly prepared by Oxfam and Development Financial International (DFI), the index measured the governments’ action on social spending, tax, and labour rights – three areas critical to reducing the gap.
In South Asia, only Bhutan (ranked 152) lags behind Bangladesh on the state commitment to cut the socio-economic disparities between rich and poor.
Interestingly, Singapore (ranked 149) also lags behind Bangladesh in the global ranking.
Denmark is the ‘most committed’ country in the world on reducing the income gap as it ranked first in the index, followed by Germany, Finland, Australia, and Norway.
The other countries in the list of top-10 most committed list are: Belgium, Sweden, France, Iceland, and Luxembourg.
