Distinguished fellow of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Professor Dr Mustafizur Rahman has said the prices of essential commodities have increased by at least 50 per cent in the last two years.

He came up with the statement while addressing a debate competition organised by Debate For Democracy at Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) on Saturday.

“It is very difficult to determine the price hike through the average inflation rate. The price of an item worth Tk 100 has now increased to Tk 150. Although the average inflation is said to be 10 to 12 per cent, prices of essential commodities have increased by at least 50 per cent,” Dr Mustafizur Rahman said.

The economist said although the recent successful movement was started for job quota reformation, the economic discrimination ensured the participation of all sections of people in the protests.
