A high-level delegation from the Environment Committee of the German Bundestag met Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintu at his office in the secretariat on Monday.

The minister said the long-standing bilateral relations between the two friendly countries have reached a strong and unique level, especially in trade, development cooperation and environmental partnership.

The meeting discussed ways to strengthen Germany’s technical and financial support for implementing Bangladesh’s development programmes to effectively address environmental and climate change challenges.

Both sides also stressed expanding cooperation in capacity development, research and knowledge sharing, circular economy, waste management, renewable energy, water recycling and overall environmental governance.

They highlighted the importance of working together on energy efficiency, green cooling, carbon emission reduction, biodiversity conservation and environment-friendly industrialisation.

The minister said Bangladesh and Germany are implementing various development projects with support from GIZ and KfW Development Bank, which are helping improve climate resilience, sustainable development and environmental governance.

He added that the ministry is committed to expanding bilateral cooperation and is keen to work more closely with Germany to tackle future climate and environmental challenges.

The meeting also emphasised effective implementation of the Bangladesh Climate Development Partnership (BCDP), seeking Germany’s support in mobilising climate finance, accelerating policy reforms, implementing innovative projects and promoting knowledge exchange. Bangladesh also expressed interest in German support for earning carbon credits from the carbon market.

The German delegation reaffirmed its continued support for environmental protection, sustainable development and climate-resilient infrastructure in Bangladesh.

The meeting was attended by senior officials of the ministry, including the secretary, additional secretaries, and German Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Rüdiger Lotz.
