A deadly wave of road crashes swept across the country during the Eid-ul-Azha holiday, killing at least 38 people and leaving dozens injured as families rushed home to celebrate the festival with their loved ones, report agencies.
5 killed in bus-motorcycle collision
Five people, including a child, were killed and 20 others wounded in a bus-motorbike collision on Dhaka-Khulna highway in Bedgram area under Sadar upazila of Gopalganj district on the day of Eid-ul-Azha (May 28).
According to eyewitnesses, a Pirojpur-bound passenger bus of Dola Paribahan collided head-on with a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction at Bedgram area.
After the collision, the bus overturned on the highway, leaving motorcycle riders and two bus passengers died on the spot. An 8-year-old child later died on the way to hospital.
Identities of the deceased and injured could not be confirmed.
Mother, daughter killed in Netrokona
In Netrokona, three passengers, including a mother and her daughter, of a battery-powered auto-rickshaw were killed and seven others injured in a road accident in Challisha area in Sadar upazila on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Nurjahan, 50, wife of Ainul Haque, a resident of Amli Keshabpur village in Rouha, his daughter Smriti Akhter, 18, and a teenager named Iti, 15.
The accident took place at Challisha Bypass Intersection on the Netrokona-Mymensingh highway around 11:30 am when a bus hit the auto-rickshaw.
SSC examinee killed in Chandpur
An SSC examinee was killed and another youth injured after a truck hit their motorcycle from behind in Chandpur Sadar upazila on Sunday.
The deceased was Md. Joha, 17, son of Miraj Saleh Uddin Taslim of Islampur Gachtala Pathan Bari in Shahrasti upazila. The youth had recently appeared for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination from Chandpur Government Technical School.
According to police, Joha and Sajjil were riding in a motorcycle when a speeding truck hit them from behind in Badamtali area of Islampur Gachtala on the Chandpur-Raipur road.
The injured motorcyclist, Md. Sajjil, 20, is undergoing treatment at Chandpur Government General Hospital.
In another accident, a hospital employee died after being run over by a bus in Hajiganj upazila on Sunday morning.
The deceased was identified as Billal Hossain, 48, a security guard at Doctors City Scan Hospital in Hajiganj.
According to police and witnesses, a "Boogdad Paribahan" ran over Billal on the wrong side while trying to overtake another bus, leaving him dead on the spot.
Three people were killed in a head-on collision between two motorcycles on the Naogaon-Bogura road at Baromile in Kahaloo upazila of Bogura district on Friday evening.
The deceased were identified as Rahim, 21, son of Abul Kalam Azad; Apurba, 18, son of Yusuf; and Prem, 20, son of Suruj, all residents of Khans Naogaon Moholla in the Naogaon municipality area. They were all friends of each other.
In Dinajpur, two college students were killed when the motorcycle they were riding collided with a private car on Saturday evening.
The deceased were identified as Jabir Khaled, 18, the only son of eye surgeon Dr Ashraf Khaled Sagar of BNSB Eye Hospital in Chirirbandar, and Riyad Hossain, son of Dulal Hossain of Baikunthapur Shahapara under Tetulia union in the same upazila.
In Bogura, the headmaster of a government primary school was killed in a road accident in Shibganj upazila of Bogura on Saturday night.
The deceased was identified as M Ashraful Islam Pramanik, 58, head teacher of Chakhabiber Para Govt Primary School under Rajapur union of Sadar upazila.
In Sylhet, two people were killed and 15 others injured when a coach hit a stationary bus on Sylhet-Dhaka Highway at Tajpur Kadamtala in Osmaninagar upazila on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Sohel, 30, driver of the bus and his helper Emon, 20.
In Habiganj, a motorcyclist and his pillion passenger were killed when a truck hit their two-wheeler on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Madhabpur upazila on Tuesday (May 26).
The deceased were identified as Abul Bashar, 35, from Narayanganj and Ashiq Ahmed, 25, from Dhaka.
In Bogura, two persons were killed and one injured in separate road accidents in Kahaloo and Nandigram upazilas on Wednesday (May 27).
A worker was killed as a vehicle ran over him on Bogura-Naogaon regional highway in front of the New Hope Feed Mill under Narhatta Union of Kahaloo upazila.
In Tangail, a motorcyclist was killed and another injured in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a motorcycle in Bhuapur upazila on Sunday afternoon.
