Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said Bangladesh will prosper only if its farmers prosper as he underlined agriculture’s central role in the country’s economy and the lives of its people.
Speaking on Tuesday at Shaheed Maruf Stadium in Tangail while formally inaugurating the pre-pilot phase of the Farmer Card programme, he said the government’s goal was to make farmers self-reliant and prosperous, bdnews24.com reports.
“I personally believe, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party believes, and the current BNP government elected by the people of Bangladesh believes that if the farmers of this country prosper, if the farmers of this country live, if the farmers of this country thrive, then the entirety of Bangladesh will thrive, and all the people of Bangladesh will thrive.”He said the government launched the Farmer Card scheme with that aim in mind.
“The goal of the current government that your votes have elected is to make farmers self-reliant, to make farmers prosperous. That is why we are giving out this Farmer Card.”
Addressing the people present at the rally, he said: “I, you, all of us who are present here today, all of the people at this field, all of the people on this stage – we may not be directly involved agriculture, but there is someone in our families who is connected to agriculture.
“Our relatives, loved ones, family members, and friends are still directly involved. That is, all of the people of Bangladesh - every family, there are 40 million families, someone in every family is connected to agriculture. The main profession of this country is agriculture.”
