Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed has been released on conditional bail in Dubai after his arrest in connection with a corruption case filed in Bangladesh.
A court in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) approved his bail petition on July 27. He was released from custody on July 30 after completing the necessary legal formalities.
Speaking to Asia Post after his release, Benazir said he had been freed on bail in line with the court's order and was in good health. He, however, declined to comment on the ongoing legal proceedings.
Dubai court imposed several conditions for his release, according to the sources. Under the bail terms, Benazir's passport will remain in the court's custody, and he will not be allowed to leave the UAE without prior court approval.
However, the Dubai authorities have not issued any official statement on the matter.
On June 12, Dubai Police and the INTERPOL arrested Benazir following a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and informed the Bangladesh government via email.
The ACC has filed multiple cases against Benazir over allegations of amassing illegal wealth and laundering money abroad. International legal measures were initiated as part of the investigation into the allegations
