Price of broiler chicken has increased in retail markets, with traders attributing the hike to supply disruptions
caused by several days of continuous rainfall.
Farm egg prices have also edged up slightly over the past week while tomato, green chilli and brinjal also followed
the same trend.
A visit to several retail and wholesale markets in the capital found that broiler chicken price has risen by Tk 10 to Tk 20
per kilogram over the past week on the grounds of tighter supplies.
According to traders, persistent rainfall across the country has disrupted transportation and supply of live chickens,
leading to the latest increase in prices.
Broiler chicken is now selling at Tk 190 to Tk 200 per kg in different markets of Dhaka, compared with Tk 180
to Tk 190 a week ago.
Farm egg prices, which had remained relatively low in recent weeks, have also increased modestly. A dozen of eggs are
now selling at Tk 120 to Tk 130, up from Tk 115 to Tk 125 a week earlier.
Ainul Islam, a poultry trader at Adabar Kitchen Market, said continuous rainfall had reduced supplies,
resulting in a slight increase in prices.
Another trader at Shekhertek Block-8 market said prolonged rainfall often causes higher poultry mortality,
leaving farms with losses. "To recover those losses, farmers usually charge higher for broiler chickens," he said.
Besides poultry and eggs, prices of several vegetables have also increased, particularly green chilli and tomato.
Green chilli prices have jumped by around Tk 40 per kg over the week and are now selling at Tk 140 to Tk 180 per kg.
Tomatoes have become significantly more expensive, with prices ranging between Tk 250 and Tk 300 per kg.
Brinjal prices have also increased slightly. Long brinjals, which previously sold at Tk 70 to Tk 80 per kg, are now priced
at Tk 80 to Tk 90, while round brinjals are selling at Tk 100 to Tk 110 per kg.
Prices of several other vegetables remained largely stable. Green papaya is selling at Tk 40 to Tk 45 per kg, ash gourd
at Tk 40 to Tk 60 each, snake gourd at Tk 50 to Tk 60 per kg, and eddo at Tk 65 to Tk 70 per kg. Onion prices also remained stable at Tk 40 to Tk 50 per kg, depending on quality.
Beef and mutton prices remained unchanged at their previously high levels, while fish prices also remained elevated.
In the capital's markets, freshwater prawns are selling at Tk 750 to Tk 1,650 per kg, baim fish at Tk 600 to Tk 800, koi fish at Tk 300 to Tk 400,
gulsha fish at Tk 600 to Tk 750, large-sized ruhi at Tk 400 to Tk 550, and tengra fish at Tk 650 to Tk 800 per kg,
depending on size and quality.
