MAGURA, Feb 24:  Onion seed growers in Magura are expecting a bumper production this year.

Farmer sources informed, due to high price of onion they are now showing high interest in onion cultivation. This year 9,050 hectares land have been brought under onion cultivation in the district as against 6,200 hectares last year.

Consequently demand of onion seeds is high and those are being sold in the local market at Tk 1,800 per kg as against Tk 700 per kg last year. In this situation Magura onion seeds growers are expecting handsome profit.

Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Magura sources informed, they have brought 60 hectares land under onion seed cultivation. The onion seeds are very close to being harvested. They are expecting 5,625 kgs onion seeds this year in the district.

Mrinal Kanti, a farmer of village Batikadanga under Magura sadar upazila said, I have brought my one bigha land under onion seeds cultivation this year. I am expecting profit of Tk 0.15 million (1.5 lakh) from my onion seeds.

Another farmer, Salim Mollah of village Karundi under Magura sadar upazila said, I have a plan to bring my four bighas land under onion cultivation in the coming season. To collect the seeds for onion cultivation I have to spend Tk at least 0.1 million (one lakh).  But I shall be able to save this money of seed purchase as I have brought my land under onion seeds cultivation and I am expecting a bumper production.

DAE official Shohrab Hossen said, as weather is favourable we are expecting a bumper production of onion seeds in the district. If existing price prevails, Magura onion seeds growers will count a handsome profit.
