'Drug trader' dies in city 'gunfight'

A suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Uttarkhan area of the capital in the early hours of Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Md Anwar Hossain, 28. He was accused in 16-17 narcotics cases filed with different police stations in the city, RAB said.

Md Quamruzzaman, Company Commander of RAB-1 and senior assistant superintendent of police, said tipped off that a group of drug peddlers gathered at Shahidnagar, a RAB team conducted a drive there around 1:55am.

Sensing their presence, the drug pushers opened fire on them, forcing the elite force members to fire back in self-defence that triggered a gunfight, UNB reported quoting the official.

After the gun battle, bullet-hit Anwar was found lying on the ground, the RAB official said, adding that he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

A member of the elite force was also injured in the incident, he claimed, adding that they recovered 3,000 Yaba pills, a short gun and six cartridges from the spot.
