Police say notorious Chattogram “criminal” David Emon had planned to flee to India on the advice of alleged fugitive gangster Boro Sajjad after fearing arrest in Bangladesh.
Superintendent of Police Masud Alam on Thursday said detectives seek to interrogate Emon in custody for 10 days.
Emon, also known as Mobarak Hossain Emon, is accused in at least 18 cases, including a high-profile double murder.
He was arrested with three associates at Narail's Jhumjhum early on Wednesday.
Masud said Emon was scheduled to reach Jhikargachha at 6am, where arrangements had already been made for him to cross the border and be received on the Indian side.
Police also recovered an Indian identification -- “Aadhaar Card” -- from Emon, bearing the name Azhar Khan, with a listed date of birth of May 12, 1998.
According to police, Emon travelled from Chattogram to Dhaka before switching vehicles and drivers to avoid detection.
Masud said the arrest followed weeks of surveillance launched after the Jun 13 killing of Jubo Dal leader Masud in Raozan.
Information obtained from another suspect arrested in Dhaka on Jul 22 helped investigators track Emon's movements.
Although checkpoints were set up on routes towards Khulna, Emon's group changed course towards Narail, where police intercepted and arrested them.
Based on Emon's information, police later recovered a foreign-made pistol, two locally made guns and other weapons from an abandoned house in Fatikchhari.
